Dr. John M. Felder is a board-certified plastic surgeon with fellowship training in hand and nerve surgery, who has been in academic practice since 2015. He was driven to become a reconstructive surgeon after surviving a severe boat propeller injury in adolescence. He is nationally regarded for his innovative approach to complex reconstructive microsurgery and nerve surgery, as well as expertise in general reconstructive plastic surgery. He regularly lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to microsurgery and nerve surgery, and teaches courses throughout the country on flap reconstruction. He is the author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters. After spending 7 years as assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis, he moved to southeast Michigan to help address the large unmet need for reconstructive surgery in this area. He now practices at Beaumont Royal Oak and Troy hospitals and continues to train residents and fellows in plastic surgery and microsurgery.
I try to educate and research with an emphasis on using the tools of plastic surgery to provide new or better solutions to unaddressed problems. Doing this is a creative process that is an art as well as much as a science. When I teach or publish, I try to inspire a passion in the audience by showing the limits of what is possible when passion and creativity are brought to bear in this field. My "work" is also my interest, hobby, art form, and passion project in life and I am always striving to improve it and share how I do this with others.
